The Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation (DSS) will resume their seasonal street sweeping schedule, which lasts from April 1 to mid-November.  DSS fleet of street sweepers help to keep streets clean and prevent dirt and debris from entering the sewer system – ultimately allowing for better drainage during a rain storm.

Residents are asked to be mindful of all temporary and permanent street sweeping parking restriction signage. To ensure curb-to-curb street cleaning, bright orange temporary parking restrictions are posted the day before sweeping service is scheduled to begin on any street.  Some streets have permanent signage that specifies a once-per-week period when parking is prohibited for street sweeping.

Please take care to read all posted parking restriction signs and be aware that street cleaning signs take precedence over other posted signs on the street. On street cleaning days, the streets should be kept clear of vehicles from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.

Vehicles that violate street-sweeping restrictions will be issued a citation and possible tow.

New Sweeper Tracker App Available for Residents!
A new online tool that allows residents to track the Department of Streets and Sanitation (DSS) street sweepers in real time. The new Sweeper Tracker App includes the upcoming season’s neighborhood cleaning schedules, which begin April 1.

Beginning Monday, DSS street sweepers will be working to clear litter and debris that has accumulated during winter months from residential and arterial streets across the City.

Residents can view these efforts here. The technology builds off the success of the City’s Plow tracker, which is activated during snow events to show the fleet of salt spreaders in real time.

Alderman Reilly is very pleased to report that the Chicago City Council voted on Wednesday to approve his Condominium Owners’ Privacy Ordinance, which was co-sponsored by Alderman Hopkins and Alderman Smith. The ordinance invokes Chicago’s “Home Rule Authority” to overrule Section 19(a)(7) of the Illinois Condominium Property Act, which forces condominium associations to share the personal phone numbers and email addresses of all unit owners upon written request by a unit owner.

Alderman Reilly sponsored the ordinance after receiving correspondence from numerous condominium associations and hundreds of 42nd Ward constituents who expressed concerns about privacy under the new State law.

Alderman Reilly believes that the Illinois State Legislature had good intentions when enacting this section of the Illinois Condominium Property Act, which sought to connect unit owners. Unfortunately, as written, the legislation mandates the release of personal contact information to unit owners, and creates significant privacy concerns.

Alderman Reilly’s ordinance prevents homeowner’s associations from sharing unit owners’ personal cell phone numbers and email addresses unless a 2/3 majority of the association votes to allow for the sharing of that personal information. The Condominium Owner’s Privacy Ordinance will take effect on April 18, 2018.

Illinois State Senator Kwame Raoul has also proposed legislation to amend the Illinois Condominium Property Act (SB0572). Senator Raoul’s amendment eliminates the requirement of condominium associations to share unit owners’ private contact information.Alderman Reilly supports Senator Raoul’s amendment and hopes it will be scheduled for a full vote in the near future.

Mayor Emanuel’s One Summer Chicago Program is now accepting applications for the more than 30,000 jobs and internship opportunities for youths ages 14 to 24. Participants gain valuable work experience while providing critical support resources. The application is available through May 21 at onesummerchicago.org.

Alderman Hopkins and Alderman Reilly presented testimony in support of “Home Rule Authority” to protect condo owners’ privacy before the Committee on Housing and Real Estate on March 26, 2018.

The Committee on Housing and Real Estate met today at City Hall for a hearing on the Condominium Owners’ Privacy Ordinance. The ordinance passed unanimously through committee. It now goes before the City Council this Wednesday March 28, 2018.

Introduced at January’s City Council, Alderman Reilly and Alderman Hopkins co-sponsored this ordinance ,which invokes Chicago’s “Home Rule Authority,” overruling a section of the Illinois Condominium Property Act that was enacted into law by the Illinois State Legislature on January 1, 2018.

Alderman Hopkins and Alderman Reilly took issue with a particular section of the Act that forces condominium owners to disclose personal information, such as email addresses and cell phone numbers, upon request from a third party.

The “Home Rule Authority” measure will protect homeowners associations from being required to share unit owners’ private information unless there is a majority vote from the entire association to disclose such information.

As preparations begin for one of Chicago’s classic races in the downtown area, the Chicago Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC) reminds residents of the traffic impacts for the set up and duration of the 39th annual Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle 8K race on Sunday, March 25, 2018, which includes over 25,000 runners.

The Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle 8K on Sunday starts in two waves, with the first wave beginning at 8:30am and the second wave taking off at 9am. The 2-mile walk with an estimated 1,000 participants, begins at 9:30am.

Traffic Impacts:
As in years past, organizers are working with the Chicago Police Department and OEMC to ensure that street closures follow a “rolling pattern” so as the last participant passes, the street will reopen and traffic will return to normal as quickly as possible.

Street closures will be in effect in the Grant Park area for preparations and set up of the event:

Friday, March 23, through Sunday morning:

Early Saturday morning, March 24:

Sunday, March 25, approximately 8am to 11:15am:

Columbus, from Monroe to Randolph will also be closed in the early morning hours of Sunday, March 25

Lake Shore Drive will remain open during the race.

City streets will re-open promptly as the final runners pass through (at a 15-minute mile pace). The Chicago Police Department will be responsible for closing and re-opening streets, they will do so in a manner ensuring runner and spectator safety.

In addition to race day route closures, residents and businesses should also be aware of the parking restrictions along the race course on Sunday. Vehicles not removed by that time will be ticketed and towed. To locate a towed vehicle, motorists can call 3-1-1 or 312-744-4444 (automated system).

Additional Information:
Those attending the race events should always heed any warnings given and be cognizant of surroundings, reporting any suspicious activity to 9-1-1 or on-site security.
