Alderman Reilly Honors Gilda’s Club of Chicago’s 20th Anniversary
Last Month, Alderman Reilly visited Gilda’s Club of Chicago to present them with a City Council Resolution, celebrating the organization’s impressive work in providing free support for men, women, teens, and children, whose lives have been impacted by cancer.
Gilda’s Club was named after Gilda Radner, one of the original cast members of “Saturday Night Live.” Laughter and love were central themes of Gilda’s career and life, including in her marriage to actor and comedian Gene Wilder, the original Willy Wonka. Gilda was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1985. She passed away in 1989, but her legacy lived on when her husband and friends established Gilda’s Club and the first red door opened in New York City in 1995.
Gilda’s Club Chicago opened its welcoming Red Door at 537 N. Wells on Valentine’s Day in 1998, and since then they have reached more than 45,000 individuals.

Early Voting Now Available for the March 20, 2018 Primary Election
Early Voting for the upcoming Primary Election is now offered at the Loop Super Site located at 16 W. Adams Street, Monday through Saturday, 9:00am – 5:00pm, and Sundays, 10:00am – 4:00pm, through March 4.
From March 5 to March 19, Early Voting will be available at 51 sites throughout Chicago. University Early Voting will also be offered at Chicago State, UIC, and Northeastern on select dates.
Early Voting allows registered voters to cast their ballot in advance of the Tuesday, March 20 Primary Election. Registration services are also available at Early Voting sites.
During Early Voting:
• Any Chicago voter may use any Early Voting site in the city, regardless of where the voter lives.
• Ballots cast in Early Voting are final. After casting ballots in Early Voting, voters may not return to amend, change or undo a ballot for any reason. It is a felony to vote more than once — or to attempt to vote more than once — in the same election.
• Government-issued photo ID is not required but is helpful if there is a question about the voter’s registration, address or signature.
• Registration services also are available at all Early Voting sites. NOTE: Any voter who needs to register for the first time or file an address change or name change must present two forms of ID, one of which shows the voter’s current address.

March in the 2018 St. Patrick’s Day Parade with Alderman Reilly Next Saturday!
The Downtown Chicago St. Patrick’s Day Parade will be held Saturday, March 17, 2018 at noon. As always, Alderman Reilly will be marching with a contingent in the parade and would love for you to join! All marchers must be lined up by 11:15am.
This year Alderman Reilly will be located in Slot #42, on Balbo Drive, just west of Columbus Drive. Please look for his trolley, complete with Alderman Reilly’s St. Patrick’s Day banners. If you have any trouble finding the trolley, feel free to ask any Parade Marshal in a yellow t-shirt and they will be able to direct you.

Neighborhood Notice: Parking Restrictions Monday 3-12 and Tuesday 3-13
Twentieth Century Fox will be filming scenes for the TV show “Empire” in the neighborhood on Tuesday, March 13th. In order to park necessary vehicles and equipment for filming, streets will be posted with NO PARKING/TOW ZONE signs at the following times:
Monday, March 12th from 8:00 pm until Tuesday, March 13th at 8:00 pm
• Both sides of Huron (between Clark and Dearborn)
• South side of Superior (between Clark and Dearborn)
• North side of Erie (between Clark and Dearborn)
• West side of Dearborn (between Superior and Erie)
• East side of Clark (from Erie heading north halfway to Huron)
• East side of Clark (from Huron heading north halfway to Superior)
Intermittent street closure will also be taking place on Huron (between Clark and Dearborn) from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm on Tuesday, March 13th. There may be stoppage of traffic for minutes at a time, but no emergency vehicles will be interfered with.
The crews will be working with the Chicago Film Office and the Chicago Police Department to ensure a safe and positive filming experience.

City Crews Working Seven Days a Week to Fill Pothole Requests
Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) crews are working seven days a week to fill potholes across the City. With as many as 30 crews out a day when weather permits, CDOT has already repaired more than 100,000 potholes in 2018.
Crews are working around the clock, including weekends and overnights to address pothole complaints received to the City’s 311.
The new union contract also provides the City with flexibility this year to assign additional crews as needed. Laborers permanently assigned to work on concrete, asphalt, electric, signs, and paint projects can now be temporarily transferred to other projects, like pothole repairs, if the need arises.
Conditions on Chicago streets continue to improve thanks to collaboration between CDOT, the Department of Water Management and private utilities, which has worked to repaved more than 1,850 miles of streets and alleyways since 2011; more than one third of the City’s streets.
Chicagoans can track the fight against potholes and see a week’s worth of CDOT’s work on the City’s Pothole Tracker application, which shows not only the calls for service but the number of potholes filled during each site visit.

86 New Police Officers Patrolling Chicago Streets, including 50 added to Districts within the 42nd Ward
Mayor Emanuel and Chicago Police Department (CPD) Superintendent Eddie Johnson recently announced the deployment of 86 new officers as part of the plan to grow the Department by 970 police officers. In addition, CPD’s new smart policing technology, utilizing predictive strategies, has also been expanded to the 12th (Near West) District.
The 86 new officers were deployed to their district assignments, adding to the 720 sworn members who have joined the Department since the beginning of the hiring plan.
Residents will notice new officers have been added in every police district in the 42nd Ward: the 1st (Central) district will receive 20 new officers, the 12th (Near West) district will receive 10 new officers, and the 18th (Near North) district will receive 20 new officers.
Additional districts receiving new officers include: the 2nd (Wentworth) district, 14th (Shakespeare) district, and 19th (Town Hall) district.
After successfully completing their training at the Academy in December 2017, these new officers have now completed their field training and are being sent to their first district detail. The new officers will benefit from the new in-service training requirement, which begins with 16-hours of mandatory training and will necessitate that all Department members take 40 hours of continuing education annually by 2021. These officers also benefited from a new cultural awareness course taught at the DuSable Museum of African American History, and new de-escalation, crisis intervention and procedural justice modules.
A station-based Strategic Decision Support Center has also been installed in the 12th (Near West) District, with additional POD crime cameras set to be complete next month, to support police in preventing, combating and responding to violent crime. The implementation of these predictive technology and analytical tools builds upon CPD’s crime strategy of targeted, data-driven enforcement to build a culture of accountability among violent offenders. Year-to-date, across the first eight police districts that currently utilize these tools, shootings are down by nearly 34% compared to the same period last year, outpacing the reductions citywide, which stands at 28%.
POD Crime Cameras Expansion
The City will increase the number of POD crime cameras in the 12th (Near West) District by the end of next month. The POD crime camera footprint will be increased to support improving investigations, including the recovery of reported stolen vehicles, responding to calls for service more efficiently, and deploying officers more strategically.
Strategic Decision Support Centers
The Strategic Decision Support Center (SDSC) that has been installed in the 12th (Near West) District will utilize existing data sources within CPD, such as offender criminal history databases, and past crime data. The new SDSC places all this information into a single, usable, platform to help district command staff and officers plan for patrol deployments or prepare to respond to a call for service. The new centers will each be staffed with a civilian University of Chicago data analyst who will collect and analyze data trends, and partner with a District Intelligence Officer to coordinate the information directly with patrol units in the field.
Mobile Technology
CPD will also issue mobile phones equipped with crime analysis tools to every beat officer who responds to a service call in the 12th (Near West) District. These devices will give real-time access to district intelligence information to police officers in the field, helping them determine deployment strategies based on historical crime data. This mobile technology will allow for smarter, data driven patrols and significantly decreased response times to potential service calls.
Smart Policing Strategies were implemented in 2017, in six police districts on the south and west sides where gun violence presented the greatest challenge for decades – 6th (Gresham), 7th (Englewood), 9th (Deering), 10th (Ogden), 11th (Harrison), and 15th (Austin). During January 2018, this technology was expanded to the 3rd (Grand Crossing) and 4th (South Chicago) Districts, and in February, to the 5th (Calumet) District.

CTA Launches Safe and Secure Program
The new Safe and Secure program is a multi-faceted effort to increase safety across the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) system and provide a more secure, comfortable traveling experience.
Beginning later this year CTA will add 1,000 new cameras and upgrade more than 3,800 older-model cameras throughout the system. Additionally, new lighting, repairs and other improvements will enhance safety at all 146 CTA rail stations. New cameras will also be installed at more than 100 CTA bus turnaround locations and video monitors will be added to all CTA rail stations to aid personnel in monitoring station and customer activity.
CTA’s security camera network has doubled in size since 2011. The cameras, found at every rail station and on every bus and train, have been an important tool to help Chicago Police identify crime suspects and detect crime patterns. All of CTA’s buses and trains have multiple cameras. The newest buses have 10-14 cameras per vehicle depending on size.
Additionally, CTA has worked closely with the Chicago Police Department’s Public Transportation Unit to strengthen and deploy strategies to fight crime that include expanded police patrols, rail saturation missions and undercover operations. Since June 2011, CTA cameras have aided Police in the investigation, arrest and charging of more than 1,300 individuals.
CTA’s Safe and Secure is funded by a new, innovative fee on ride-hailing services championed by Mayor Emanuel, the first such fee in the country dedicated to public transportation improvements.
