The Chicago Avenue Resurfacing Project – Between Larrabee Street & Michigan Avenue

The Chicago Avenue Resurfacing Project Begins

Please be aware that this month sees the beginning of a large repaving and infrastructure improvement project on Chicago Avenue, located between Larrabee Street and Michigan Avenue.

This project is part of the Chicago Department of Transportation’s Arterial Street Resurfacing Central Area Project. These improvements include ADA sidewalk upgrades, curb and gutter removal and replacement, milling and paving of the existing asphalt pavement, and final restoration and striping of the lane.

During construction, temporary “No Parking” signs will be periodically installed as required for each phase of the project. Parking may be restricted during working hours. This project is scheduled to be completed by December, 2019.

If you have any questions about this project, please contact the 2nd Ward office at (312) 643-2299, or by email at ward02@cityofchicago.org

Repainting of CTA Brown Line Tracks Huron to Erie Complete

Before

After

Although the Chicago Transit Authority is a separate governmental agency that operates outside the purview of the Chicago City Council, Alderman Reilly (in coordination with CTA and Chicago Department of Planning and Development) created a density bonus fund that allowed him to commit private development dollars from nearby projects to this significant infrastructure improvement project.

In 2018, Alderman Reilly secured local impact funds from three private development projects (142 West Hubbard, 300 West Huron and 110 North Wacker) to repaint 895 feet of the Brown Line tracks, from just north of Huron Street to just south of Ontario Street.

Phase II and III of the project, which included painting the tracks between Huron Street and Erie Street, was completed during the first week of July. Phase I of the project, which included painting the tracks between Huron Street and Superior Street, was completed in 2018.

The CTA will soon begin work on Phase IV of the project, which includes the tracks between Erie Street and Ontario Street. Work on this important Public Benefit will continue through the summer and fall, as long as temperatures permit to facilitate the painting work.

Stay tuned for future updates on this significant infrastructure improvement!

LaSalle Street Bridge Lane Closures

The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) has implemented lane closures on the LaSalle Street Bridge over the Chicago River to allow for panel replacements. Traffic will be reduced to one lane during work.

One Chicago Square-1 W Chicago Pedestrian and Traffic Impacts

Although fencing is already in place for the sidewalk closure, pedestrians still have access to the sidewalk, but should exercise caution when walking by the construction site.

The Curb Lanes along Chicago, State, Superior, and Dearborn will remain a No Parking/Tow Zone throughout the project, to allow for demolition, and then the protected pedestrian walkway.

The sidewalk along the east side of Dearborn, from Superior to Chicago, has been closed to pedestrian traffic. Pedestrians will be rerouted to the west side of Dearborn.

City of Chicago Launches Household Electronic Recycling Pilot Program

Now it’s easier than ever to get rid of your old electronics! The Chicago Department of Public Health is launching a Household Electronic Recycling Program at various locations throughout the city.

When thrown out with our garbage, household electronics often contain hazardous substances, such as lead, mercury, and PCB’s (polychlorinated biphenyls). These substances can contaminate our air, soil, and water. Recycling electronics is the law – and it’s good for the environment too! Through proper disposal methods or recycling, these hazardous substances are reprocessed and reused in an environmentally-responsible manner.

Accepted items include:

• Computer and monitor
• TV
• Printer, fax, scanner
• Keyboards and mice
• VCRs, DVD players, DVD recorders
• Video game consoles
• And many more!

The closest drop off location to the 42nd Ward is located at 1150 N. Branch Street, Chicago, IL 60642 and its hours are every Tuesday from 7:00am-12:00pm, every Thursday from 2:00pm-7:00pm, and the first Saturday of every month from 8:00am-3:00pm. During business hours, an attendant is outside, ready to help unload your vehicle and accept your materials. Materials should not be left outside the facility unattended.  Please note that once the truck is full, no more electronics will be accepted that day.

In addition to the electronic recycling services offered, one of the locations (1150 N. Branch St) is also home to the Household Chemicals Recycling Facility. This facility accepts a range of items, including household cleaners, oil-based paints, and solvents. It does NOT accept business/commercial sector wastes, explosives, fireworks or latex paint. For a full list of accepted items, please click here.
