Chicago Smart Lighting (Streelight Modernization Program) Activated!

270,000 Upgraded Lights to be Installed Citywide Over Next Four Years

Mayor Rahm Emanuel recently launched the historic modernization of Chicago’s streetlight system by flipping the switch to activate the first four-block stretch to receive the new lights on South Chicago Avenue from 79th to 83rd Streets. The ambitious Chicago Smart Lighting Program will replace 270,000 of Chicago’s public lights with high-quality LED fixtures over the next four years and add a management system that will give the city a state-of-the-art smart lighting grid.

In 2017, streetlight fixture replacement will be focused in neighborhoods with heightened public safety concerns on the west and south sides. In addition, during the first twelve months of work, new lights will be installed along key arterial streets in every ward of Chicago, to ensure neighborhoods throughout the City benefit from the improved lighting. The project will also include targeted repairs to poles and wiring to extend the life of existing infrastructure.

The program website, www.chicagosmartlighting.org, provides the ability to track the progress of the program as new high quality LED streetlights are installed across the City over the next four years.

The new lights, which will be owned and operated by the City, will consume 50-75 percent less electricity than existing high pressure sodium (HPS) lights, generating significant electricity cost savings that will offset the cost of the modernization. LED fixtures also last two-to-three times longer than HPS lights. In addition, ComEd has committed to providing $6.2 million in rebate funding for the program in 2017 as part of the company’s energy efficiency incentive efforts.
The program was procured by the Chicago Infrastructure Trust in close coordination with the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) and the Department of Innovation and Technology. This is the largest project to date from a rebooted CIT, which is dedicated to assisting the City with executing large-scale and complex public projects.
The project is expected to be completed in four years and cost up to $160 million. The City of Chicago has contracted with a team led by Ameresco Inc., a national leader in the field of energy efficiency and renewable energy projects, to implement the program.

The program includes three components:

  • Replacement of approximately 270,000 existing street, alley and viaduct light fixtures with modern, more reliable, energy-efficient LED lights that deliver higher quality lighting.
  • Installation of a state-of-the-art lighting management system that will enable remote monitoring and control of the City’s outdoor lighting. It will greatly improve the city’s responsiveness to service requests by providing real-time updates when outages occur. It will also allow lighting levels to be controlled remotely. The system will be phased into operation during the project and the first portion of the system is expected to be operational by spring of 2018.
  • Targeted stabilization and repair of light poles and wiring on an as-needed basis and subject to available funding in order to extend the life of existing infrastructure.

Hurricane and Earthquake Disaster Relief

In the wake of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria and recent earthquakes in Mexico City, our thoughts are with the victims and families affected by natural disasters. Residents are encouraged to consider supporting organizations assisting with relief efforts and the long recovery ahead in Texas, Florida, Louisiana, Georgia, Puerto Rico, Mexico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and other affected areas.

The City has created a website cityofchicago.org/disasterrelief that includes a list of verified charities and organizations assisting with these efforts. Please help us spread the word!

Local Efforts:

Friday, September 22nd 7-11PM

Segundo Ruiz Belvis Center, 4046 W. Armitage Ave.

Event Hosted by The Puerto Rican Agenda

Paypal donations to support local community relief efforts to PRHurricaneRelief@boricuahumanrights.org

The Puerto Rican Arts Alliance and National Museum of Mexican Art Relief Fund is also accepting donations for emergencies in Puerto Rico and Mexico.

Tuesday, September 26th 6-Midnight

Mi Tierra Restaurant, 2528 S. Kedzie Ave.

Event Hosted by The Little Village Chamber of Commerce

October 11th 5:30-7PM

Old Crow, 149 W. Kinzie St.

Event Hosted by The Latino Caucus

According to FEMA, cash donations are preferred to allow organizations the most flexibility to address needs on the ground. Please do not donate unsolicited goods such as used clothing, miscellaneous household items, medicine, or perishable foodstuffs at this time. If you choose to donate, be sure to contribute funds through a trusted, legitimate organization and website. Check Charity Navigator to determine the best organizations to donate to.

Volunteers should not self-deploy at this time as this will create an additional burden for first responders. To ensure volunteer safety and the safety of disaster survivors, volunteers should only go to affected areas with a specific volunteer assignment, proper safety gear, and valid identification.

Additionally, the American Red Cross has a safe and well website where people can check for their loved ones and people in affected areas can also register themselves as safe and well.  Residents can also follow @ChicagoOEMC on twitter for continued updates.

Lastly, Puerto Rico Emergency Management officials suggest the following:

  • Contact the island’s disaster relief team by e-mailing maria1@prfaa.pr.gov –  Because of high volume, leaders are asking that you only send one email – no follow-ups – unless the status of your loved one has changed.  Include your contact information and as many details about your family or friend as possible.
  • Call the Puerto Rico Washington D.C. office at 202-800-3133 or 202-778-0710 – Staffers are taking names and numbers and developing plans to check the welfare of people who remain unreachable or missing as the island begins to recover. Officials say getting through to someone over the phone has been difficult because of backed-up phone lines.

River North Gym Takes Over Former David Barton Gym Space at 600 W. Chicago Avenue, Chicago

27,000 square foot facility will reopen under new management 4th Quarter 2017

RIVER NORTH, CHICAGO, Illinois, September 18, 29017 – Almost 9 months after shutting down, the space once occupied by David Barton Gym, will be reopened under the management of River North Gym. The space is owned by ECQ 600 W. Chicago Property LLC. Club Ventures LLC originally owned and operated several of the David Barton Gym facilities. On December 21st, 2016, DavidBartonGym.com announced that they were closing their locations in New York, Boston, Miami, Bellevue (Wash), and 600 W. Chicago Ave. in Chicago, Illinois. Club Ventures stated their closing was due to filing for bankruptcy and “severe competitive pressures.”

The original location of River North Gym opened in 2011 inside of the Merchandise Mart (222 Merchandise Mart Plaza, Suite 951). This original location is now just under 22,000 square feet, having undergone three expansions from the club’s inception until present day. The 600 W. Chicago Avenue location will be their second under the River North Gym name. Both locations of River North Gym are privately owned and operated by Bernie LeCocq.

It was later discovered that Club Ventures III LLC, DBA David Barton Gym had 600 W. Chicago Ave. as it’s main place of business. They filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the Southern District of New York. Chapter 7 means that the company was going to liquidate. Three other locations of David Barton Gym, owned by Meridian Sports Club LLC remain open in Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

Once complete, the updated space will emphasize the natural light and incredible river views unique to this location, and feature new equipment and a variety of classes similar to boutique fitness providers but within a full-service gym,” Bernie LeCocq, owner of River North Gym.

River North Gym:

The original River North Gym, located in the world-famous Merchandise Mart, full-service health club facilities , personal training, small group training, cutting-edge group fitness classes and more. With over 22,000 square feet, our recently expanded and renovated facilities feature top-of-the-line cardio, strength, and free weight equipment, plus fully-appointed locker rooms and premium towel service.

Quincy Station Landmarking Recommendation Approved by Commission on Chicago Landmarks

Alderman Reilly is very pleased to announce that the final recommendation for landmarking the Quincy Elevated Station at 220 S. Wells Street was recently approved at the September 7, 2017 meeting of the Commission on Chicago Landmarks.

Opened for service on October 3, 1897, the Quincy Elevated Station has served generations of Chicagoans and visitors to the City, and remains the best example of an original Loop “‘L’ Station.

With the exception of a hiatus for restoration in the 1980s, the Station has been in daily service for 120 years.

The massive riveted steel elevated structure is a tangible symbol of the Industrial Revolution which involved major changes in construction and transportation. The structure also displays fine architectural detail, including Neoclassical-style pressed-metal ornamentation, and pressed metal and oak finishes in the station houses.

The Loop ‘L’ and Station was designed by engineer John Alexander Waddell, an authority on steel construction who designed bridges across the globe. The ‘L’ has become an iconic feature of the city.  Its encircling perimeter so clearly defines the central business district that it gave downtown Chicago its famous nickname, the Loop.

The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) requested the designation as part of its 125th anniversary of the Loop ‘L’ service in Chicago.

A renovation project for Quincy Station is also underway to make the 120-year-old station fully wheelchair accessible, while preserving its historical appearance. The $18.2 million project is the largest renovation in nearly 30 years for Quincy, which serves more than 2.2 million riders annually via the Brown, Orange, Pink and Purple lines and is a major transfer point for 10 CTA bus routes, Union Station and the LaSalle Street Metra Station.  The project is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

The Commission on Chicago Landmark’s recommendation will be introduced to City Council in October, and be referred to the Committee on Zoning, Landmarks and Building Standards.  At the Committee meeting where designation is considered, the public can make oral or written statements for the Committee’s consideration.   Upcoming Committee meeting agendas are posted on the City Clerk’s website. After Committee, the landmarking will require a full City Council vote.

Chicago Architecture Biennial exhibit envisions the future of the Riverwalk

A floating ecology classroom, a boating raceway, and an audiovisual performance space are among the 27 visionary ideas for Chicago’s riverfront by the River Edge Ideas Lab exhibit unveiled today by Mayor Rahm Emanuel, the Metropolitan Planning Council (MPC), nine participating architects and other partners and funders.

Part of the Chicago Architecture Biennial, the River Edge Ideas Lab features development concepts from world-class architectural firms for three iconic locations: the Civic Opera House waterfront; beneath the Congress Parkway bridge; and below the St. Charles Air Line Bridge. Each location represents a unique challenge to the Riverwalk’s potential 1.8-mile extension from the main branch to Ping Tom Park in Chinatown.

Participating River Edge Ideas Lab architects include Adjaye Associates, James Corner Field Operations, Perkins+Will, Ross Barney Architects, Sasaki, site, SOM, Studio Gang, and SWA.

Beginning Saturday, the firms’ design concepts for each location are on display at Expo 72, 72 E. Randolph St, through Jan. 8, 2018. The public is invited to provide feedback at the exhibit or at www.ChiRiverLab.com. The 27 visions will be posted on that site Saturday.

“With the success of our Riverwalk and the four new boathouses we’ve built throughout the City, we’ve begun to transform our river into the next recreational frontier, but there is more work to be done,” said Mayor Emanuel. “This bold initiative will help us imagine new possibilities to further develop our riverfront in ways that will benefit current and future generations of Chicagoans.”

DPD will incorporate public feedback from the River Edge Ideas Lab into updated River Design Guidelines in 2018. The updated guidelines will offer best practices to create a continuous pedestrian and bicycle path with accessible connections and open spaces incorporating integrated landscaping, artwork and lighting.

A traveling version of the River Edge exhibit will open Monday, Sept. 18 at the Bridgehouse Museum at Michigan Avenue and Wacker Drive, followed by a new location every two weeks.

Special gallery talks and panel discussions involving architects and planners are also scheduled during the four-month exhibition.

Further details on these events can be found at the Ideas Lab website.
