In July of this year, all remaining Chicago Tribune personnel and equipment will leave the Freedom Center site at Chicago and Halsted, after which the demolition phase will commence to make way for the construction of the permanent casino facility. The project has been designated “environmentally complex” due to the site’s proximity to a waterway, which means that additional monitoring and special techniques will be used to minimize environmental impacts and public health risks. Additional details about this designation can be found here. The demolition process, which is expected to take 5 months to complete, will be entirely mechanical, with no explosives employed.
